Old Apples Die.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;”

Another generation of Apples is about to be harvested by the Grim Reaper. There will be parties at Apple HQ. Stock will split. The Grand Circle of Tech will turn another notch.

This comes as no surprise to anybody who has watched Apple for a year or two. It certainly should be no surprise to anybody who lives in Cache Valley. We have a landfill full of old Apple computers.

For everybody else, please be aware that Apple is about to Call Home all the OSX10.5 systems. Apple has released OSX10.7 Apple only supports 2 OSX releases at a time. So, now, OSX10.7 and OSX10.6 are supported. OSX10.5 will join all previous versions.

To say it bluntly, the reason all those shiny new computers are at the front of the Apple store, is because somebody in back is shooting the old computers in the head.

Of course, just because Apple has dropped support, doesn’t mean your friendly old OSX10.5 system is instantly vulnerable.

It actually plays out like a zombie movie. First your friend will have a scratch. It will not be treated. It becomes infected. It festers. Then he eats your brain. If the rest of us are lucky, somebody comes along and shoots him before he kills again.

So, sometime in the next month or two, Apple will come out with a security update. If Apple does not provide that update for OSX10.5, then USU Security will have to start forcing the removal of OSX10.5 systems from USU’s network. It will not be safe to browse the web with them. They will be a threat to their owners and everybody else.

It is not that we hate Apple. Well, I hate Apple. But not for this. And Scotty and Bob Houghton LOVE Apple.

The obsolescence of Apple computers is part of the Apple life style. It is demanded by Jobs. Every Apple owner chooses planned obsolescence when they purchase an Apple. Your god has spoken and You Must Move On.

UPDATE 9 Sept 2011

We have confirmation from Apple. They have come out with a critical security update for OSX10.6 and OSX10.7. This issue effects OSX10.5. It is trivial for Apple to fix this problem in OSX10.5, but they have not fixed it. And, this security problem has already compromised the security of thousands of people.

The Apple Security update is at: support.apple.com/kb/HT4920

Kaspersky has a good explanation of the threat: https://threatpost.com/en_us/blogs/attackers-obtain-valid-cert-google-domains-mozilla-moves-revoke-it-082911

Apple is not supporting OSX10.5. It is not safe to browse the web with OSX10.5. USU IT Security now has to eliminate it from USU desktops. We will start with the desktops that are most likely to hurt USU. These include: Administrative and Financial people. Then we will get all the rest.

UPDATE 1 Aug 2012

OSX10.8 (Mountain Lion) is out and selling like hotcakes. And we now we have confirmation that Apple has dropped support for OSX10.6 http://www.technewsdaily.com/4639-apple-security-update-ditches-snow-leopard-windows-users.html

The new Safari v6 browser fixes hundreds of vulnerabilities. But, not for OSX10.6 To protect USU, IT Security must now begin the process of eliminating all those vulnerable and unsupported OSX10.6 systems. The longer we wait, the worse the problem..

UPDATE 26 Feb 2014

OSX10.6 support remained intermittent through the rest of 2012 and 2013. It appears that Apple has pronounced it finished on 25 Feb 2014. See: ComputerWorld – Apple retires Snow Leopard
