video integration with Canvas

Those of you who know me from the early days of e-learning, know that multimedia especially video in online courses has been one of my key areas of research and presentation.  Early on (1998) I was challenged with building a online course called the “Science of Sound.”   It needed videos to really help the student grasp the concepts and experiments.

With Canvas, video upload, display, and compression is integrated into the system.  Using the Kaltura engine, and the Rich Text editor within Canvas, faculty can upload videos, right into content.

The videos I create for this class are demonstrations of building web pages with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.  I use Camtasia to screen record while I provide play by play with voice.  Once they are recorded and exported to mp4, I upload them into Canvas and it takes it compresses, sizes, and puts them right in the content.  I love it.  It has streamlined my course building process.

The additional perk is that the video tool allows you to create on the fly audio or camera/audio recordings right in Canvas.  So you can create replies to students, or quick talking head presentations without using any third party product on your desktop.
