The Utah State University College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHaSS) Council had the opportunity to meet with CHaSS Dean John Allen Fri., Nov. 18 to be able to relate thoughts and concerns from a student perspective. One of the highlights of the meeting was that of the first developments of a new practicum in the college, to be headed by speech communication major Abby Kingsford.

Dean Allen spoke about the many ways the college’s faculty have taken cuts in their own luxuries and how Allen has taken significant deductions in his own travel time to be able to pinch pennies and help the college be more economical. He said he feels confident about the abilities of the college to produce students who provide positive values and worthwhile occupations to society. He talked about how he had been at a convention elsewhere in the country days earlier and that deans of notable schools on the East Coast were seeking his advice on how to operate their college after seeing a display of CHASS’s new magazine, Liberalis.

The second Utah State University College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHaSS) Student Giving Campaign has come and gone. A variety of CHaSS Council members helped the college add to its running total of $506.76 in cash and online donations. The council members were found in front of the east side of Old Main Nov. 16 with a booth, but unlike the first campaign that included cookies, the students offered hot chocolate on a chilly fall day. Like the Student Giving Campaign Launch, students were given the opportunity to pay $5 for a Student Giving Campaign t-shirt. The proceeds go back to the college’s scholarship fund. Students, faculty and any individual are also welcome to contribute any donation to the scholarship fund.

”This is just another example of how our students value one another and are willing to give to others so everyone gains a solid and exceptional education while here,” CHaSS Dean John Allen has previously said about the campaign. “I am very proud of our students who stepped forward to help others, which in turn will help us all as we face the challenges of the future.”

Look for a third CHaSS Student Giving Campaign to arrive by the end of the semester!

Student Giving Campaign

USU College of Humanities and Social Sciences to conduct second Student Giving Campaign Event Wednesday

LOGAN—For the second time during this semester alone, the student council of the USU College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHaSS) will be holding a marketing event to give students the opportunity to give back to the university and college that provides so much to them. The CHaSS Student Giving Campaign will continue Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the east side of Old Main, on the USU campus. The CHaSS Council will be providing free hot chocolate and information to learn about why it is important for students to financially give back to the college. Students will be given the opportunity to donate whatever amount they choose to future scholarship funds from the college. They can pay $5 for a CHaSS Student Giving Campaign t-shirt to account for their donation.
“I am a big believer in starting a habit of giving while you are young,” said CHaSS Senator Erika Norton. “The CHaSS Student Giving campaign gives students that opportunity and they know that every dollar donated goes directly back to students in the form of a scholarship. I am excited for the upcoming event and know it will be successful because of the giving nature of the students in our college.”
Wednesday’s event is a follow-up to a successful CHaSS Student Giving Campaign launch. Behind the efforts of members of the CHaSS Council, the launch took place Mon., Oct. 18 at the Taggart Student Center patio on the USU campus.
The primary purposes behind the event were numerous. Besides the opportunity to receive a free cookie, USU students were given the opportunity to pick up information about how to receive one of two $500 scholarships, effective next semester. The students were required to write a 500-word essay about why a liberal arts education is important.
“The College of Humanities and Social Sciences senator and council have begun another new tradition for our college,” said John Allen, dean of the college. ”This is just another example of how our students value one another and are willing to give to others so everyone gains a solid and exceptional education while here. I am very proud of our students who stepped forward to help others which in turn will help us all as we face the challenges of the future.”
More information can be seen at the college’s official website, www.chass.usu.edu.

You may have heard about the Education First movement taking place in Utah recently. Most of the organizations on campus here at USU are working together along with many others in the state to get people informed about this movement and to sign a petition to be taken to the state legislature. Tuition costs are rising at a rate of $200-$300 per year, making it difficult for young college students to obtain the means to complete a college degree. Also, due to the reductions in funding from the government, programs have been cut, and thus the quality of our education is declining. The goal is to get 20,000 signatures from Utah citizens to urge the state government to stop making budget cuts and to give more support and funding to public and higher education.

All the universities in Utah are having a competition to see who can get the most signatures. ChaSS Council has teamed up with a couple of other groups in the last week or so to give students the opportunity to sign the petition. On Friday the 28th we were in the TSC giving free popcorn to those who signed, and at the Howl we were able to get at least 2,000 signatures by rewarding supporters with a free drink. Pictures of this very successful night will be coming soon!

If you have not yet signed this petition please do! Help USU win this competition, and more importantly, support your fellow students and the future of higher education in Utah! To learn more about this call to action, or even to sign the petition online visit http://www.educationfirstutah.org/index.php/education-first.
